Migration is an essential part of the development of any region or country. It influences the size, composition and distribution of population. The economic survey 2017 has shown that India is witnessing a rapid increase in internal migration. In the period 2001-11, according to Census estimates, the annual rate of growth of labour migrants nearly doubled relative to the previous decade, rising to 4.5 per cent per annum in 2001- 11 from 2.4 per cent in 1991- 2001. Having migrant workers is necessary for the development of Indian economy. These migrant workers play an important role in the development of states by providing cheap labour in many small and medium enterprises related to manufacturing and construction sectors. Migration has important implication for human development. Migration normally leads to higher income, savings and remittances with positive implication for human development and poverty reduction. The main focus of this book is on identifying factors causing internal migration and socio-economic factors affecting internal migration decision in Punjab. This study has also focused on living and working conditions of migrant workers in urban informal sector. To evaluate working conditions the study has used variables such as nature of the work (skilled or unskilled), current occupation of the migrant workers, working hours, working days and income levels which determine the living arrangements of the migrant workers. An effort has been made to compare the condition of migrants at origin and destination place. This study has analyzed the nature, size and role of remittances in internal migrant households and identifies the important factors affecting the decision of migrants to send remittances to their origin place.
